The Internet may well be the greatest human project of the past 20 years. It connects people in ways that wouldn’t have been possible in years past and it’s enabled communications and interaction on a human level, no matter where we are on the globe. Getting on the Internet is simple and there are plenty of companies willing to help you.

ISP

The first thing you need is an Internet service provider. These companies give you a gateway on to the web. Choosing the right one for you all depends upon what you want, or expect, to use the Internet for.

There are so many companies getting in to the ISP business it can be a daunting prospect. Even supermarkets are offering Internet access nowadays.

At the basic level to achieve a good experience on the net nowadays you’ll need a broadband connection. Slower connections are available but they’re nowhere near as cost effective, and will provide a frustrating browsing experience.

Shop around for the best deals, as many companies you may already have services from might well offer a discount.

If you don’t have a service with a company that offers a broadband service as a free or cheap add-on, there are plenty of companies you can choose from. Check out their broadband speeds and monthly costs but also remember to take notice of the contract length. Some cheaper services are tied to lengthy service periods that are difficult to cancel should you wish to move provider.

Getting Started

Once you’ve got your provider and set-up your PC, you’re ready to go. Before you let the Internet in to your home though make sure that you have sufficient virus and security protection running, as even the most legitimate looking website can harbour nasty codes to infect your PC.

Whatever you’re looking for a search engine can help. There are billions of pages on the net covering an amazing array of topics and without some kind of filter we’d all be lost.

Say you want to find football results in the English first division in 1987. All you have to do is go to a search engine and type that statement in to the search bar. You’ll get a page of results that will take you to the most relevant page. It’s as simple as that, most of what you need to find can be done through search engines.

The World Wide Web

Getting on the Internet is very simple and there are numerous companies vying for your money. Shop around and check your current suppliers for an additional Internet connection service. Once you’re on the net use the search engines to help you navigate and get the most out of the web.
